Are global cities homogenizing? An assessment of urban form and heat island implications

چکیده

The rapid growth of cities—along with the increasing connectedness world's social, economic, and political systems—has been hypothesized to generate a homogenization urban form associated environmental impacts. These hypotheses, however, have rarely tested. Employing satellite imagery 150 most populous cities in China, India, United States, we examine how area configuration built-up land within has changed between 1995 2015 assess impacts on heat island effect. We find similar trends across three countries. strongest evidence is connectivity form, while shape linked higher daytime surface (SUHI) intensity. In context this other research, postulate that identified may lead biotic abiotic environment cities. Homogenization presents an opportunity for learn from each as they encounter ecological outcomes driven, part, by their increasingly form.

Surface urban heat island across 419 global big cities.

Urban heat island is among the most evident aspects of human impacts on the earth system. Here we assess the diurnal and seasonal variation of surface urban heat island intensity (SUHII) defined as the surface temperature difference between urban area and suburban area measured from the MODIS. Differences in SUHII are analyzed across 419 global big cities, and we assess several potential biophy...

Urban Form and Extreme Heat Events: Are Sprawling Cities More Vulnerable to Climate Change Than Compact Cities?

BACKGROUND Extreme heat events (EHEs) are increasing in frequency in large U.S. cities and are responsible for a greater annual number of climate-related fatalities, on average, than any other form of extreme weather. In addition, low-density, sprawling patterns of urban development have been associated with enhanced surface temperatures in urbanized areas. OBJECTIVES In this study. we examin...

Urban Heat Island

We are all familiar with the fact that cities are generally warmer than the surrounding, more rural areas. We see it referenced most nights in our television weather reports. It is especially significant on nights with clear skies and light winds which favor radiational cooling. This is most significant in the rural areas but in the city, the excess heat absorbed during the day and the local he...
